Student Participation
Students throughout
Alamance
County are reading this
year’s Alamance Reads selection, Blue, by Joyce Moyer Hostetter.
Friends of the Library has generously donated 250 books to the schools
so that every child will have a copy they can read.
We have asked the
schools to keep us updated as to what they are currently doing and what
they plan to do. All students are also encouraged to participate in any
and all of the Alamance Reads program. Below are submissions we have
received from the schools so far.
"Thank
you for your kind donation of "Blue" to Woodlawn middle school. Our 8th
grade students kicked off a grade level reading of "Blue" by watching
the "Miracle at Hickory" to learn about the hospital and a get a better
understanding of the polio epidemic. Several of our 6th and 7th grade
students have joined an online book discussion and will begin reading
and discussing the novel in the coming week."

“Our two 8th grade teams (about 215 students) at Graham Middle School
are currently reading Blue in their language arts classes, and
one teacher is having her students do research on topics related to the
book, such as polio, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Warm Springs, etc. The
students who will actually get to meet Ms. Hostetter have to "apply" for
that privilege based on their work on these projects. We are
looking forward to Ms. Hostetter's visit in February.”
